This September, FIGHT NIGHT is back and fiercer than ever!
Nothing Special Productions is proud to announce the latest installment of the raucous and visceral stage combat spectacular, Fight Night! The theme this time is Valkyries, celebrating the feminine warrior spirit, inspired by the Valkyries of Norse mythology.
Fight Night virtuoso Gaby Labotka is directing and curating the event, while NSP Producing Director Scott Patrick Sawa produces (naturally). For the first time, Fight Night will be presented on TWO NIGHTS, Friday, September 16th and Saturday, September 17th at 9pm at the brand new The Edge Theater in Edgewater!
For Fight Night: Valkyries, we have challenged our participating artists and companies to create a fight scene that is choreographed by a female or non-binary person, and/or passes the “Bechdel Test”, defined for our purposes as a scene featuring two named female or non-binary characters who talk to – and also fight – each other about something other than a man.
Fight Night Director/Curator Gaby Labotka will be co-hosting the festivities with the perennially bad-ass Moira Begale, while local rock band Sadie and the Stark will grace us with their dark and seductive tunes.
Returning Fight Night artists and companies include Otherworld Theatre Company, Reutan Collective, and of course, Nothing Special Productions. We will be welcoming pieces for the first time from Christopher Pazdernik and Barbara Seifert, as well as Claire Allegra Taylor and Vahishta Vafadari. Finally, we’ve got Fight Night veterans Brittany Ellis leading “The GALkyries”, Maria Burnham with the brand new Ghostlight Ensemble, and John Morrison‘s The Zero Fox Coalition.
For the first time, a portion of the proceeds from Fight Night will go to a local charity. In line with the theme of Valkyries and in response to the abuses that Profiles Theatre perpetrated in our community, we’ve chosen Rape Victim Advocates, a Chicago-based non-profit supporting survivors of sexual abuse as they navigate the difficult steps immediately following their traumatic experience. Find out more about RVA at their facebook page, or at www.rapevictimadvocates.org.
Tickets for Fight Night: Valkyries are $18 and can be purchased directly though Dime!
